I've always started up my sites with some paid forum posting, but its seems to be hard to find people to post, people who are doing it are doing it so cheap that nobody else wants to now
I've quite often used lots of categories and had not many posts, as soon as I cut down on some empty categories I noticed a lot more people interested in the site, so can def vouch for this idea!
- Never give up, always have faith in your community, if its going slow try get people interested with a contest or promote your site more
- Referal contests can be great for your forum, always helps to have more people!
CSS can be a great way of designing your site but many people perfer HTML, Depends what you use really, a mixture seems to work the best for me :) Using CSS tags to control everything like fonts/colours but still the normal tables etc from HTML
Its always great to have more content to go with you forum, I think this place did it really well by having the forum as the "main" site but extra resources connected to it like the directory. Its how I'd do it for sure with a community based site.
